Brief history of spices
Spices, now widely available and an inexpensive commodity, were once tightly guarded and generated immense wealth. The spice trade began in the Middle East over 4000 years ago. The Silk Road was an important route connecting to Asia with Mediterranean world, including North Africa and Europe. Trade in the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the great civilizations in which spices from Asia, North Africa and Persia played a main role in their treasure troves.
Spices in Europe
In the 15th century, Europeans transformed the spice trade. By this time due to the improvement of navigational equipment onboard the vessels, the entrepreneurs were able to travel further into the heart of the spice lands in Asia. They managed to control the spice trade as the popularity rose in Europe.
