Utrolig kjekt!

Maten her var veldig god, samme gjaldt drikken.

Neste stopp: Kalutara, Tangering hotel. Etter to dagers energi gikk turen omsider videre til siste stopp, Colombo.

Mt. Lavinia hotel.

Herlig lagt opp!

Exotic Island trip

Sri Lanka trip organised by Silvertree Norway - Review

I had my first trip to Sri Lanka during my summer holidays last July and realized two things very early during my trip, that this beautiful small island is not only famous for it’s gems but is a gem itself and secondly that I will be travelling back as soon as I can!

Beautiful waterfalls on the way to Nuwara Eliya.

We had our first days in Sri Lanka in Colombo, the largest city in Sri Lanka. It was nice to experience this city which was buzzing with life, amazing food and a beautiful sea view where a walk along Galle face beach is a must to experience the massive waves right outside this big city. The city is filled with great restaurants in all price ranges but for a special night out I would highly recommend trying out the Ocean seafood restaurant at the Kingsbury. We were recommended by our travel company, Silvertree Norway, to go there for the best seafood in Colombo and it was absolutely delicious.

Outside of the city, leaving the heat behind us in Colombo and only about a 3-4 hour drive up endless and beautiful hill areas, we arrived at Kandy. Sri Lanka’s cultural capital as some may call it. We were immediately greeted at the Amaya Hills hotel with a spectacular view and gracious hotel staff wearing the traditional Kandyan clothing. Since Kandy is famous for it’s music, dance and culture, going for a kandyan dance show was the ideal thing to do as well as taking a look around the town which has a unique style with it’s colonial architecture. Of all the things to see in Kandy the nature, scenery and the freshness of the air was beyond anything else the top of the experience there. From Kandy we travelled to Nuwara Eliya. No words and barely photos can describe the magnificent landscape of the mountain hills around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, I wish every traveller got the chance to experience that by him or herself. I will let a few pictures follow with to give an example.

What summarises my experience in Sri Lanka was that every area was surprisingly different from another area only few hours away. Nuwara Eliya felt like a completely different world, with low trees and tea plantations, every version of the colour green as far as your eye could see and cold compared to the sizzling heat in Colombo. When travelling to Nuwara Eliya it is a must to stop to take a look at some of the many waterfalls along the way and to visit a tea plantation to sea how the leaves in our daily cup is plucked, processed and stored. In Nuwara Eliya we stayed our first night of many in one of the Jetwing hotels in Sri Lanka and this chain became a favourite of mine. With their strong environmental policy, commitment towards the local communities and sustainability in each and every place around the island. We were greeted with great hospitality at the Jetwing hotel, Nuwara Eliya which made a great place even better. It was indeed a good to rest there before a refreshing river rafting down the Kelani river.
After the mountain hills it was good to wind down, relax and enjoy the Indian ocean at the east side of the island, at the Amaya beach hotel and spa in Passikudah. The resort is quite new, with spacious and modern rooms and has a nice beach area where it’s possible to swim in the sea, enjoy good food and Ayurvedic treatments at their spa. An ideal place to wind down after being on the road for a few days.

Yala national park
Yala national park was in my view the top of the trip. Even when driving towards the national park we drove past a wild elephant at the side of the road who seemed to be waiting for people driving by handing him something tasty. Like many times before in Sri Lanka, the environment and nature in Yale was still surprising compared to other parts of the country. Going from the green hills to the beach and then towards the dry and sandy national park felt like travelling to many different countries. When we arrived at our Jetwing hotel in Yale we were pleasantly surprised with seeing wild animals in the hotel area which fitted the atmosphere of the place perfectly. There is probably few hotels where you find people waking up excitedly long before sunrise to grab an early breakfast to go as they hop into a safari jeep but that was certainly the theme in Yale since most of the visitors come there for the safari. We were no exception and had a great time driving through a small part of the park, seeing wild elephants taking their morning bath, more types of birds than I could count, crocodiles, deer’s and snakes to mention a few. Once in a while a lucky traveller manages to see the leopards who live in the park but we were unfortunately not one of those lucky few. It was worth the try and maybe next time !

The last night on the road before travelling back to Norway was a day and a night in Galle. This city which reached it’s peak of development when Sri Lanka was a Dutch colonial. The Galle fort is a large fortress and a world heritage site. It’s a beautiful city with a extraordinary sea view.

I feel honoured to have had the chance to travel to Sri Lanka and would recommend anyone who loves to travel, not to miss out on this true gemstone of the Indian Ocean. I believe that no matter if you are young or a tad older, like excitement, relaxation, exploring nature or animal life, new culinary experiences or just seeing a new place, Sri Lanka is a must. It is a huge advantage to have good travel advice. We were very happy with the personalised and thought through advice we got from Silvertree Norway who helped us organise and arrange our tailor made trip to the detail, from helping us to find good hotels which fitted our needs, guides with extensive knowledge about the areas we were travelling through and activities such as rafting. Silvertree Norway made our vacation feel exciting, relaxing and full of pleasant surprises all at the same time.

Kind regards,

Exotic Island trip

Many thanks to Silvertree Norway for wonderful help with arranging my trip around Sri Lanka April 2016. Logistics and professional service was top class, and despite a rather hectic program everything went smoothly! Sri Lanka proved (as usual!) to be a versatile and friendly country, with everything from mountains to beaches – and plenty of attractions in between. Great foods – including lots and lots of wonderful, fresh fruits - tasty teas, brilliant beaches and of course welcoming locals at every point. I´ll be back as soon as I can!
